Bespoke, Elegant Refinement
What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty expert Dr. Catherine S. Chang, MD, FACS, has a deep understanding of facial anatomy and is a world-renowned rhinoplasty expert. As a craniofacial specialist, she understands the importance of preserving one’s unique heritage and identity and enhancing your best features.
Rhinoplasty, better known as a “nose job,” is used to change the appearance of the nose so that it better complements one’s face. The procedure can also be performed to improve breathing, especially for patients who have a deviated septum or some other condition that impairs breathing.
Rhinoplasty adjusts both portions of the nose, including the upper portion, which is bone, and the lower portion, which is cartilage.
There are two techniques that can be used when performing a rhinoplasty:
- Open rhinoplasty technique which uses smaller incisions placed at the narrowest part of the columella, which is the area between the nostrils.
- A closed rhinoplasty is when the procedure is performed inside of the nostrils with no external incisions.
Benefits of Rhinoplasty
Everyone wants to look in the mirror and love the person they see looking back at them. But what if you aren’t entirely happy with how your facial features look? Some patients often feel insecure and self-conscious about the appearance of their nose.
There are many reasons that patients decide to undergo rhinoplasty. Some of the top benefits of this popular cosmetic procedure include:
- Correcting a deviated septum
- Improved breathing
- Improved size
- Facial balance and harmony
- Refined nasal bridge and profile
- Removal of nasal dorsal hump
- Refined nostril width and size
- Refined nasal tip

Rhinoplasty Recovery
When performed by rhinoplasty specialist Dr. Chang, her patients often experience a shorter recovery time. Most of Dr. Chang’s patients recover and can return to work in as little as 1 to 2 weeks.
After the procedure, patients may experience some swelling, redness, and bruising to varying degrees. You may also have slight tenderness and bruising on your cheeks and below your eyes.
Your new nose will be splinted on the outside to provide protection and support and usually no internal packing is used. The dressing is usually worn for a week, and then removed, along with any remaining stitches.
After a week, you will notice great improvements in the shape and size of your nose. As swelling decreases and tissues begin to heal, you’ll see gradual changes to your nose. However, it can take months to one year before swelling completely subsides and this can vary from person to person.
Am I A Candidate for Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty may be performed for both cosmetic reasons and functional reasons. Some patients undergo the procedure to improve the size and appearance of their nose to achieve a smoother nasal and bridge profile. Others may undergo the procedure for functional reasons, such as fixing a deviated septum or a broken nose to resolve breathing problems.
Whatever your reason is to enhance your nose or improve breathing, there are certain factors that are considered in determining if a patient is a good candidate. These include:
- Age
- Facial Anatomy
- Overall health
- Result expectations
- History of prior rhinoplasty
- History of prior nasal trauma
If you’re in good health and have reasonable expectations for how you want your nose to look, you may be a great candidate for rhinoplasty.
