Fat Grafting to the Face
Fat transfer to the face is a less-invasive procedure to restore the natural loss of fat and collagen that occurs with age and element exposure to the hands.
Benefits of a Facial Fat Transfer include:
- Usage your own body fat as a filler, significantly reducing the potential for allergic reaction
- Restoration of Facial Volume
- Reduction of wrinkles, creases, and folds
- Diminished Facial Lines & Wrinkles
- Results that last for years
- Natural presentation when compared with traditional dermal fillers
WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL?
The meticulous process of facial fat grafting involves three steps: extraction of the fat from the donor area with liposuction. decanting, centrifugation, and processing of the fat, followed by the reinjection of the purified fat into the facial areas needing improvement.
Dr. Chang typically performs facial fat grafting under general anesthesia. To first perform liposuction, Dr. Chang will first make a small 5-millimeter incision or series of incisions at the treatment area. A cannula, or a thin, hollow tube, is then inserted into the incision. The cannula will first be used to manually loosen the excess fat using a controlled motion using a saline solution called tumescent. The fat is then purified and then reinjected into areas of the face to restore volume loss and give the patient’s a fuller, more youthful appearance.
Who is an ideal candidate for facial fat grafting procedures?
Good candidates for fat transfer include patients who are in good mental and physical health and want to subtly increase their breast size or rejuvenate their hands. Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding are not candidates for this procedure.
Dr. Catherine Chang, MD, FACS recommends that candidates for facial fat transfer should:
- Be in good health
- Be non-smokers
- Have realistic expectations
- Be mentally prepared to have surgery
- Understand the risks of a surgical procedure
Facial Fat Transfer Recovery
Immediately after fat transfer, you might experience slight redness and discomfort, and bruising is possible at injection points. Your face will also likely be puffy or swollen. These side effects tend to dissipate quickly and a long period of rest of recovery isn’t necessary.
Fat transfer recovery time varies from patient to patient, but most of Dr. Chang’s patients should arrange to take at least 5-10 days off from work and other social activities. Initial healing takes 1 to 2 weeks, after which the swelling will gradually subside before the final results are apparent.
